GRS installed and commissioned three separate system in Korea from 1988 - 1992 for the Korean National Railway. The systems are referred to as CCR or Central Control Room and the three CCRs control the Kyongbu (Seoul-Pusan) Line of the KNR. The Kyongbu Line is the main rail corridor that runs the length of the Korean pensiula. The Seoul CCR controls the territory north of Seoul to Uijongbu, the Seoul area and south to Pyongtaek. The Taejon CCR controls the area from south of Pyongtaek to near Taegu and the Pusan CCR controls from Taegu to Pusan. The KNR operates 4 classes of passenger trains on the Kyongbu Line. The Samaeul (Super Express) trains are high speed trains ( > 70 mph ) that stop in Taejon, Taegu and Pusan. They offer two classes of service, a dining car, restrooms and air conditioned comfort. The trip to Pusan takes 4 hours and 10 minutes and in all my time in Korea, I never saw a Samaeul train more than 5 minutes late. They usually run within seconds of the published schedule. The Tongil, Mugunghwa and Puldulgi class trains have fewer ammenities and more stops. The Puldulgi class trains stop at every station, have bench type seats, no air conditioning and are usually standing room only. |
